I need one that flies at a good distance and steers well… doesn’t have to be like: http://www.helihobby.com/html/t_rex_600_heli.html but it has to be at a lower price(around 100$ or something)…

A decent electric heli - about $150/$250 - 3D for about $400

A decent gas heli - about $1500

Stay away from the birds without tail rotors, the coaxial helis, they fly like crap. I would recommend this for a newbie

http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFLH3000

If this is your first bird, the first thing you need to learn is hovering. Learn to hover with the tail pointed at you. Don’t get it higher than your belt while learning to hover in place. If you start to lose control, land it, take off, and try again. Once you’ve spent about a week non-stop learning hovering, then learn forward, backward, stopping, side to side, and spinning with the rudder. Spend about a week doing that. Once you get that down, then start doing figure 8’s. This time fly if well above your head so you can correct the mistakes. Spend about another week straight learning this. Then, once you’ve mastered the basics, keep on practicing. Later, look into buying a 3-D helicopter so you can learn inverted tricks. Don’t buy a 3-D bird at first because you wont be able to control it for 3-D flight so you don’t want to waste your money if you crash it beyond repairs. Make sure you learn the parts of the helicopter too, because you will have to replace parts eventually. Buy 2 extra battery packs too if you’re going to go electrics. This way you can fly non-stop. One battery is charging, one battery is charged, and one battery is the one you’re playing with at all times. I cant stress it enough, learn to fly a cheaper heli before crashing an expensive one.

Good luck

I am working on a robot that will be controlled remotely. The robot is basically a humanoid with wheels. This project has a few servos OK let’s say 8 servos. Now I have never owned or ever used a airplane/heli type transmitter. So before I drop $600 on a transmitter I would like to know how they work? So here is what I want it to do.

Can you program it so ONE stick as you go up will power one servo and then as you go down past the center on the same stick and have it power another servo? I’ll say the same thing differently, on one of the up and down sticks if your at 50% to 100% you will be controlling one servo and then from 0% to 50% your controlling a completely different servo? Can I do that?

Next is that there are buttons on the controller. Can I set it up to have servo one be at 30% when pushed and so on or what are the buttons for?

Next question, Say I want servo one to be controlled by the right up and down stick, can I just set it up to do that or is each number on the receiver set to one of the buttons or stick?

Last question, Here is the radio I’m looking at, what do you guys think of it?
http://2.4gigahertz.com/systems/futk9255.html
Thanks a lot this really helped, Yeah I been reading the manual for awhile now. I was always wondering what that mixed channel did. I have the 3pm-2.4g and last night I decided to look at it’s mix function and figured out how it worked. Thanks.

If anybody else like to add more go right ahead.

Yes, you can program the radio for 2 channels slaved to 1 function. As far as setting one servo to activate at a certain position on the throw is another question I would have to look at a manual to see. The switches on the radio do let you set a servo to a certain position. For example, on heli’s you flip a switch for throttle lock which sets the throttle servo at a certain position and then the throttle controls the pitch of the blades. Here’s a link to the manual for that paticular radio. Check out their mixing section to see if the radio will perform the functions you want it to do.

It is imperative when looking at the difference between gas and nitro powered remote control helicopters that you really check them out before committing to one kind.

It must be said that gas powered helicopters are more labor intensive; yet they are rewarding. Both types of helicopters can really showcase their agility levels as well as their flying capabilities - higher and fastest.

With you use gas powered or nitro powered remote control helicopters, fun is bound to be had. Fuel replacement is necessary when they run out. When you set up the helicopters for their flight, be careful to avoid starting a fire, so you can enjoy all your helicopter has to offer.

There was once a helicopter shopper who had a gas or nitro powered remote control purchase in their hands. They had decided that using either one of these was much more fun than using an electric helicopter. Why was this? They found that the remote control did not respond near as well.

It is not known if this customer just felt the way they did about electric helicopters because they found gas or nitro powered remote controls responded better due to this one particular failure or if there was a universal issue with all electric remote controls.

However, when fliers come together and talk about which remote controlled helicopters do better, respond better and get a height range better, most say the gas or nitro powered remote control helicopter do better. Why is this? Even though these gas and nitro powered helicopters are more work than others, their flying abilities remain unparallel to others.

Suppose you are aiming to get into the Guiness Book of World Records for making your helicopter fly backwards further than anyone else who in the world. It has been said that the gas helicopters last much longer than the battery charge in the electric run helicopters. The fuel in the gas and nitro powered helicopters will last longer than the battery of an electric remote controlled helicopter.

Even though the gas and nitro powered Remote Controlled Helicopters work much better than the others, you pay for what you get. Not only are they expensive in their costs, it costs to fill it back up whenever the gas runs out. Don’t forget you will also have to clean the apparatus of the helicopters.

However, the rewards of being challenged are worth the money you will be shelling out in the long run. Be sure that where you buy your gas powered or nitro powered helicopter that your buying from a reputable independent or commercial dealer.

If you are looking into buying a helicopter, research the prices in your area and the surrounding areas so you know for sure that you are getting the best deal available for the money you put down.

Sometimes, it can be annoying not to mention frustrating buying your first gas or nitro powered remote control helicopter and paying more than your neighbor who has a similar product but bought it at a much cheaper price and are happier because they actually had money left over.

The choice is really left up to you… but between electric and gas powered helicopters, hands down helicopters operated on gas seem to work much better.
Believe it or not, WalMart sells them. I don’t know how big you are wanting, but the ones I’ve seen there are pretty small… and pricey. Expect to pay around $30 for a decent one. Hope this helps…

They make a helicopter called the Belt-CP, and it is the biggest ready to fly helicopter they make. If you are a complete beginner I would recommend starting with the Esky Lama V4;
http://www.xheli.com/2-4ghz-lama-v4-silver-version-.html

Very easy and great learning helicopter.

4 channel helicopters go up and down by changing the speed of the main blades.
6 channel helicopters change the pitch/angle of attack of the blades.
http://www.rcdiscuss.com/index.php?topic=68.0

Good luck!

Not sure… However note that these things aint for kids… The word flying high speed blade over a meter accross comes to mind. Or bladed remote control missile as they are big.

So he will need lessons or thats £400 down the drain on impact or someone torn to bits.

There are some magazines. Go look in WHSmiths. If in London there was a shop between Camden station and regents park. Heading up hill.

You are also looking at £200 ish at least for anything good.
